Ortain is a broad-spectrum insecticide also manufactured by Coromandel International.1 Like Ortain Super, it combines two active ingredients, but in slightly different proportions:
Acephate 75% w/w: An organophosphate insecticide with contact, stomach, and systemic action.
Fipronil 5% w/w: A phenylpyrazole insecticide with contact and stomach action, and some systemic properties.2
This combination makes Ortain a powerful tool for controlling a wide range of insect pests in various crops, although it's particularly effective in paddy (rice).
Key Features and Benefits:
Broad-spectrum activity: Controls a wide range of chewing and sucking pests, including stem borers, leaf folders, planthoppers, and thrips.3
Dual mode of action: The two active ingredients offer different modes of action, providing enhanced efficacy and reducing the risk of resistance development.
Systemic and contact action: Offers both systemic and contact activity, providing comprehensive protection.
Rapid knockdown and long residual activity: Provides quick knockdown of target pests and offers extended control, reducing the need for frequent applications.4
Synergistic effect: The combination of Acephate and Fipronil results in a synergistic effect, providing better control than either ingredient alone.
Mode of Action:
Acephate: Inhibits cholinesterase, an enzyme essential for nerve impulse transmission in insects.5 This disruption leads to paralysis and death of the pest.
Fipronil: Disrupts the insect's central nervous system by blocking GABA-gated chloride channels, leading to paralysis and death.6
Targeted Pests:
Ortain is effective against a wide range of pests in various crops, including:
Rice: Stem borers, leaf folders, planthoppers, thrips.
Cotton: Bollworms, aphids, jassids.
Vegetables: Caterpillars, aphids, whiteflies.
Application:
Ortain is typically applied as a foliar spray, ensuring thorough coverage of the plant. It's crucial to follow the recommended application rates and guidelines provided on the product label for optimal efficacy and to avoid phytotoxicity.
Recommended Crops:
While Ortain can be used on various crops, it is particularly effective in rice (paddy).
Safety Precautions:
Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when handling and applying Ortain.
Avoid contact with skin, eyes, and clothing.
Do not inhale the spray mist.
Keep out of reach of children and animals.
Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat.
Important Note: Always refer to the product label for specific instructions, recommended crops, application rates, and safety precautions.
